Wester Ross

Northern Scotland: Wester Ross

No place worth going is easy to get to
Torridon
Head north from Plockton into Wester Ross before heading to Orkney or Inverness

The Torridon Mountains are composed of red and brown sandstone about 1 billion years old sitting on Lewisian Gneiss up to 3 billion years old, the oldest rock in Europe. Particularly striking is Beinn Eighe topped with Cambrian quartz which shines silver.

A lush, sub-tropical-style, oasis perched on a peninsula at the edge of Loch Ewe amid the rugged landscape of Wester Ross,
Plants flourish here, despite the northerly latitude, thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stream. And yes those are actual palm trees!

Fasten your seatbelts for a 2053 foot climb through Bealach na Ba (pass of the Cattle) carved by a glacier on the Applecross Peninsula. The top has to be one of the best viewpoints in Scotland

From here you can see the Outer Hebrides, the whole of Skye and the islands of the Inner Hebrides.
